Marcel Wanders presents Circus Collection for Alessi
“The circus is larger than life. The pageantry astonishes and what you see, hear and feel never leaves you. That one-of-a-kind magical feeling is now celebrated through this innovative collection,"- Marcel Wanders
Alessi has long been the standard for excellence in the area of tableware and household accessories, particularly with stainless steel. The challenge of combining the functionality of the products with the imagination of the circus was particularly inspiring to Marcel Wanders. “The circus is larger than life. The pageantry astonishes and what you see, hear and feel never leaves you. That one-of-a-kind magical feeling is now celebrated through this innovative collection,” explains Marcel Wanders.
From the beginning, Marcel Wanders and Creative Director Gabriel Chiave envisioned the concept as thoroughly borrowing from the historical, unexpected symbols of the circus, while at the same time, their goal was to create collectible heirlooms. The Alessi Circus range includes plates and trays made of steel, ceramic bowls and mugs, along with tin and glass storage containers. Using bold, geometric patterns of circles, stripes, conic shapes, and dynamic colours such as white, black, yellow, red and gold, each piece delivers an experience of wonder and amusement.
In addition, the studio designed a special set of limited edition circus characters that are as functional as they are entertaining. Each of the five characters has its own story to tell and bring the perfect touch, smile and magic to the table. Marcel Wanders says, “These products are the new antiques. The circus universe offers us so many angles into the design that are wildly engaging and festive. It is a collection unequivocally designed to bring smiles and delight.”
The Nutcracker, “The Strongman”, is an artist who makes the hardest choices. The Corkscrew, “The Jester”, jumps up and down in an explosion of colour. The Musical Box, “The Ballerina”, is an acrobat who turns on a ball in the company of a funny little mouse. The Call Bell, “The Ringleader”, represents a ridiculous ringmaster, led by a little monkey who runs after a banana. And finally, there is the Candy Dispenser, “The Candyman” who, with a sweet-carrier hat, generously gives out sweets to adults and children alike.
“The circus is filled with wonderful personas that all play their small part in the spectacle. Each character in this iconic series surprises with its own personality and specific historical carnival relevance to be treasured forever,” adds Gabriele Chiave.
